Hildegard von Bingen: Laudes de Sainte Ursule /Ensemble Organum * Peres For Sale

Hildegard von Bingen: Laudes de Sainte Ursule /Ensemble Organum * Peres | | Reviews

Product Overview

At first glance, one might wonder why Harmonia Mundi has brought out simultaneous releases focusing on the Office of St. Ursula: Anonymous 4's 11,000 Virgins and this disc. But in fact the recordings have little duplication, since Marcel Pérès devotes his program solely to the Lauds for St. Ursula's feast day. In contrast to Anonymous 4's exquisite ensemble and purity of sound, Pérès prefers an earthier, more elemental sound, achieved by having women's voices sing in chest tones. Long unison lines are spun out in a measured, decorated style that is quite gripping on its own terms, but which might prove grating after some time during the CD's 79-minute course. Pérès, as usual, provides cogent, provocative annotations, and the recording's spooky resonance proves as haunting as the performances. Not for all Hildegardians, perhaps, but fascinating stuff. --Jed Distler

Codex Chantilly: Airs De Cour Du XIVe Siecle For Sale

Codex Chantilly: Airs De Cour Du XIVe Siecle | | Reviews

Product Overview

The Chantilly Codex is the pivotal music document of the 14th century and one of the monuments of medieval music. Many of the shadowy greats of early French composition--including Solage, Cordier, and Andrieu--are represented here. The music of the ars subtilior--the subtle art--is eccentric, whimsical, extravagant; it contains the widest diversity of emotion. The Ensemble Organum, directed by Marcel Pérès, performs these works with stylistic deftness. --Joshua Cody

Mystery of Ancient Voices (Le Mystere Des Voix Anciennes) For Sale

Mystery of Ancient Voices (Le Mystere Des Voix Anciennes) | | Reviews

Product Overview

This purely a capella French ensemble consists of Monique Avril, Rebecca Bain, Richard Costa, Annie Paris, Françoise Slacik, and Norbert Vidal. Their blending of male and female voices is reminiscent of recordings by Ensemble Venance Fortunat, directed by Anne-Marie Deschamps, whose transcriptions Mora Vocis uses for much of the polyphony on this recording. The material is focused around the central figure of early thirteenth-century polyphony, Perotin 'the Great', but also includes a variety of polyphonic genres as well as the chant melodies upon which Perotin and the other, anonymous composers built. This recording contains several surprising interpretations and beautiful performances.
CD contents:

Pérotin

1 Alleluia posui adjutorium (organum triplum, Montpellier MS) Fulbert de Chartres 2 Stirps Jesse Anonymous 3 Mater Dei / Mater virgo / Eius (motet, Montpellier MS) 4 Mane prima sabbati (monody) O natio nephandi / Conditio nature / 5 Mane prima sabbati (motet, Montpellier MS) 6 Alleluia video celos apertos (monody) 7 Alleluia video celos apertos (organum duplum, St. Victor MS) 8 Haec dies (organum triplum, Wolfenbuttel 628; clausula, Florence MS) 9 Alleluia post partum (Aquitanian trope) 10 Alleluia post partum (organum duplum, Florence MS) 11 Alleluia nativitas (monody); Ex semine (motet, Montpellier MS) Pérotin 12 Alleluia nativitas (organum triplum, Montpellier MS)

Parisian Plainchant - Mass For Christmas Day XVIIe and XVIIIe siècles (17th-18th Centuries) / Peres, Ensemble Organum For Sale

Parisian Plainchant - Mass For Christmas Day XVIIe and XVIIIe siècles (17th-18th Centuries) / Peres, Ensemble Organum | | Reviews

Product Overview

Quiz question: when was Gregorian chant composed? Most people figure it was some indeterminate point in the Middle Ages. In fact, new chants were being composed (by, among many others, Dufay and Palestrina) at least through the 18th century. For example, 17th-century France saw an effort to Gallicize plainchant: virtually the entire liturgical repertory was recomposed in French Baroque style--including trills and ornaments. (Think of monks singing Couperin.) This recording by Marcel Pérès, who has done fascinating work reviving chant from many different times and places, re-creates a 17th-century Parisian Mass for Christmas Day, using a contemporary missal compiled for Nôtre-Dame as well as chants by Campra and Delalande. The superb singing by Ensemble Organum and the boys of Les Pages de la Chapelle is more accessible than that on some of Pérès's other recordings. Best of all, following old French practice for festal Masses, verses of chant alternate with verses improvised on the organ: playing a fine 17th-century instrument, Pérès improvises the organ verses himself, exercising musical skills many of his fans didn't know he had. --Matthew Westphal

Machaut: Messe de Notre Dame For Sale

Machaut: Messe de Notre Dame | | Reviews

Product Overview

Although Machaut's oft-recorded Mass is probably the best known work of medieval music, Marcel Pérès and his Ensemble Organum make you literally hear it for the first time. For starters, the movements are performed in a liturgical context, with appropriate plainsong insertions. The vocal lines, in turn, are ornamented with boisterous scoops, Bob Dylan-like slides, and decorations that will sound strange to modern ears. Yet the ornaments illuminate the work's celebratory aspects, and brings Machaut's quirky imagination into firmer focus than more conservative recordings. Pérès is to Machaut as Schnabel was to Beethoven. --Jed Distler

Les Premieres Polyphonies Français For Sale

Les Premieres Polyphonies Français | | Reviews

Product Overview

You won't hear a finer early music vocal group than Ensemble Gilles Binchois. These eight singers--five women, three men--led by tenor extraordinaire Dominique Vellard don't just perform: They bring us wholly into the music's presence. These pieces aren't just the familiar sounds of so many chants and polyphonic works. Because of the incredible naturalness of the singing and the generously resonant acoustic that lifts and carries the music upward, we sense a direct connection to the music's origins and original function in habitual, communal worship. Apart from their liturgical context, these pieces are quite beautiful all on their own; some are startling in their harmonic and melodic originality. The chants are sung in a lovely, flowing, gently inflected style; the multi-part works benefit from perfectly tuned and matched voices. --David Vernier

Chant Mass for Christmas Day For Sale

Chant Mass for Christmas Day | | Reviews

Product Overview

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the heyday of the Baroque, the church of France attempted to revive the Galician chant style, which had been absorbed into the traditional Gregorian repertoire. This revival was short-lived, but did provide inspiration to many French composers of the time. Marcel Peres and Ensemble Organum, joined here by Les Pages de la Chapelle, present a performance of the Mass for Christmas Day as it would have been heard in the period. Highly ornamented organ interludes intersperse the glorious singing of the finest and most talented exponents of this fascinating repertoire.

Perotin For Sale

Perotin | | Reviews

Product Overview

It would be impossible to adequately describe the inherent haunting beauty of Perotin's music, or to fully detail its far-reaching influence in latter-12th-century France. The opening "Viderunt omnes" is a perfect illustration of the surprising vitality and highly charged sense of forward motion that can be obtained with relatively simple rhythmic impulses and harmonic devices. The male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble generate an electrifying resonance that vibrates everything in the room that's not solid or nailed down. You can literally feel this music, ringing with natural harmonics and set to body-moving rhythms. Yes, it's religious music, intended for lofty cathedral spaces; but it moves, and it's moving, and this recording gives it to you full blast. --David Vernier
